Digestive Health: Understanding IBS, Bloating, Constipation and Gut Health

Digestive problems can affect every part of your life. Whether you’re living with bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, IBS, food sensitivities or simply don’t feel your digestion is working as it should, understanding why these symptoms are happening is often the first step towards improving them.

Many people spend years managing symptoms without ever looking at the bigger picture. While medication can be an important part of treatment for some people, digestion is influenced by far more than the gut alone.

Your nervous system, hormones, immune system, lifestyle, diet and gut microbiome all work together, which is why no two people experience digestive symptoms in exactly the same way.

Common digestive symptoms

Digestive symptoms vary from person to person, but some of the most common include:

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal discomfort or cramping

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhoea

  • Alternating constipation and diarrhoea

  • Excessive wind

  • Acid reflux

  • Food sensitivities

  • Feeling full very quickly

  • Irregular bowel habits

Sometimes symptoms develop gradually over many years. Others begin suddenly following illness, antibiotics, stress or significant life events.

What causes digestive symptoms?

There isn’t usually one single cause.

Digestion is influenced by many different factors including:

  • Your gut microbiome

  • Stress and your nervous system

  • Diet

  • Sleep

  • Hormones

  • Previous infections

  • Medication

  • Antibiotic use

  • Lifestyle

  • Medical conditions

Understanding which factors may be contributing to your symptoms is often far more helpful than simply treating the symptoms themselves.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

IBS is one of the most common digestive conditions, affecting millions of people.

Symptoms may include:

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal pain

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhoea

  • Changes in bowel habit

IBS is known as a functional digestive disorder, meaning the digestive system isn’t working as expected even though routine investigations may not identify structural disease.

Every person experiences IBS differently, which is why a personalised approach is so important.

Bloating

Occasional bloating is common, but persistent bloating shouldn’t simply be accepted as “normal.”

Possible contributing factors include:

  • Gut bacteria imbalance

  • Food sensitivities

  • Stress

  • Constipation

  • Hormonal changes

  • Swallowing excess air

  • Certain medical conditions

Understanding when bloating occurs and what other symptoms accompany it can provide valuable clues.

Constipation

Constipation is about far more than how often you open your bowels.

It may involve:

  • Straining

  • Hard stools

  • Incomplete emptying

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Bloating

Many factors can contribute, including diet, hydration, medications, lifestyle, hormones and the gut microbiome.

The Gut Brain Connection

Your digestive system and nervous system communicate constantly.

Stress, anxiety and prolonged nervous system activation can influence:

  • Gut movement

  • Pain sensitivity

  • Bowel habits

  • Digestion

This doesn’t mean symptoms are “all in your head.”

It means the gut and brain work as one connected system.

This is often called the gut brain axis, and it is now recognised as an important part of digestive health.

Could your gut microbiome be involved?

Your digestive system contains trillions of bacteria that help support digestion, immunity and overall health.

Sometimes changes in the gut microbiome may occur following:

  • Antibiotics

  • Illness

  • Long term stress

  • Dietary changes

  • Certain medications

For some people, understanding the gut microbiome can provide useful additional information alongside a full case history.

When should you seek medical advice?

Digestive symptoms should always be assessed appropriately.

You should seek prompt medical assessment if you experience:

  • Blood in your stools

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Severe or worsening abdominal pain

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Ongoing night time symptoms

  • A significant change in bowel habit, particularly if you’re over 50

Homeopathy is not a substitute for appropriate medical investigation where this is needed.

How I approach digestive health

Rather than focusing on a diagnosis alone, I look at the wider picture.

During a consultation we explore:

  • Your digestive symptoms

  • Your overall health

  • Stress and emotional wellbeing

  • Sleep

  • Hormones

  • Medical history

  • Lifestyle

  • Individual symptom patterns

Where appropriate, we may also discuss whether gut microbiome testing could provide additional information.

Every person is different, so every plan is tailored to the individual.
