Bloating and Gut Health, Could Your Gut Bacteria Be Out of Balance?

Bloating is one of the most common digestive complaints I see in clinic. While occasional bloating can be normal, ongoing bloating may be a sign that your gut microbiome is out of balance.

Your gut microbiome is home to trillions of bacteria that play a vital role in digestion, immune function, mood regulation, and overall health. When certain beneficial bacteria become depleted, digestive symptoms such as bloating, excess gas, constipation, diarrhoea, or abdominal discomfort can begin to develop.

One group of beneficial bacteria often associated with digestive health is Bifidobacterium. These bacteria help break down dietary fibre, support the gut lining, and produce compounds that help maintain a healthy digestive environment. Low levels of Bifidobacterium have been linked to digestive discomfort and bloating in some individuals.

Another important group is Faecalibacterium, which helps produce butyrate, a short chain fatty acid that nourishes the cells lining the gut and supports a healthy inflammatory response. Reduced levels may contribute to digestive irritation and reduced gut resilience.

The good news is that food can have a powerful influence on the microbiome. Foods that may help support beneficial bacteria include:

• Oats

• Onions

• Garlic

• Leeks

• Asparagus

• Lentils and beans

• Apples

• Berries

• Flaxseeds

These foods contain fibres and plant compounds that act as fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, helping them grow and thrive.

However, every microbiome is unique. While one person may benefit from increasing certain foods, another may need a different approach based on their specific gut bacteria profile.

This is where GutMapDX testing can be valuable. The test provides a detailed analysis of your gut microbiome, helping identify imbalances and allowing for more personalised dietary recommendations. Rather than guessing, we can gain a clearer understanding of what is happening within your gut and create a targeted plan to support better digestive health.

If you struggle with bloating, digestive discomfort, or other ongoing gut related symptoms, contact me to find out whether GutMapDX testing could help uncover some of the underlying factors affecting your health.
